Winter Wonder Soraka – League of Legends
The Bodice
The top bodice piece was made using this free pattern from Mood Fabrics, which was modified to be more of a shirt/mini-dress than a full length gown.
I used some fabric paint (acrylic paint mixed with textile medium) to add the geometric accent shapes to the front and added rhinestones with E6000 for some extra glam.
The Shawl
The shawl is a very basic triangular cut piece of fur – with extra attention paid to the direction of the fur pile. The pom-pom is made from a circle cut from the same fur and attached to the base garment with some thick embroidery floss.
I do not put faux fur through my sewing machine (purely personal preference), so this was “hemmed” by hand and with some hot glue. The front broach and back gem were attached using E6000 directly to the garment.
The Skirt
The skirt was made from 1 layer of purple satin and 1 layer of blue cotton, this was drafted from a simple circle skirt pattern and adjusted to fit the shape and flow for the character. The edges are made from a metallic gold spandex that was cut into the scalloped shape and top stitched down onto the skirt.
Once the edging was applied, I marked out lines for and applied gold HTV diamond accents, added gold rhinestones in between the diamonds for even more sparkle. The top waistband is closed on the inside using Velcro and the fur top layer snaps into place using some magnetic snaps.
The diamond accent on the bottom of the skirt closure slit is 3D printed and covered with the same gold spandex fabric using contact cement. It was then glued into place using a scrap of fabric and some E6000. This piece helps keep the skirt edges aligned and closed for wearing. I added the top fur band using faux fur strips, paying attention to the flow of the fur. I used magnetic snaps to allow the fur strips to open and close for putting on/taking off the skirt.
The Waist Mantle
The waist mantle was made from 2 layers of blue cotton fabric that were sewn together like a giant pillow case, flipped inside out, and topstitched around the edges for a crisp seam. I modified a basic circle skirt into a half skirt for the general shape and added curved edges for a sloping effect at the front.
I cut some faux fur into strips – being very mindful of the fur grain/flow to keep it flowing vertically no matter where it was placed on the mantle. I stitched the short edges of the strips together, and then attached them directly to the edges of the mantle skirt. I cut gold snowflakes from gold HTV and applied them to the outside of the mantle, then added gold rhinestones sporadically to fill the space and add some flair.
Once I was done with the base of the garment, I added an adjustable waistband to allow me to adjust it for wear throughout the day – this was made of nylon webbing and a flat plastic parachute buckle.
The Hooves
The hooves were 3D printed using this file and padded with pourable silicone and high-heel gel pads, I added some tubes of fur to the ankle area to make them appear more seamless when worn. I added some non-slip shoe pad rubber to the bottom of each hoof to help prevent slipping when wearing
The base of the socks were made from a blue spandex and this pattern from DrCos. The gold piece at the top of each sock were made with 5mm EVA foam and a pattern that I drafted myself. The gold effect was achieved using a gold spandex stretched over and glued to the foam pieces. I ended up making a pair of skin-tone shorts and attaching the socks directly to the bottom of the legs to help keep them up.
Accessories
The accessories are mostly 3D printed and accessorized with findings such as chains, rings, or rhinestones I had in my craft-stash. They were smoothed using sandpaper and modeling paste, primed with filler-primer, painted with acrylic paints, then sealed with an acrylic sealant.
I made the printable models myself using resources from the LoL ModelViewer web app. My models are available for use and download here.
The Wig
The wig started as Map of Beauty wig and a bundle of wig fibers.
The base of the wig is a helmet wig. It is hollow with a wire frame that was covered with a layer of quilt batting then layered with hair. The front pieces are quilt batting core “stems” with foam craft balls for the bottom shapes. These shapes were wrapped with tulle to prevent the hair from being moved off of the shapes given that they are face framing pieces. I added gold embroidery floss in a wrapped pattern to accent the shapes and add some flair.
The braid has twill twisted trim as the core pieces (but twill tape will work just as well). To add volume and make it look like long strands of hair, I tied some clumps of fibers incrementally down the length of the braid core pieces. Once I had the hair set in place for each of the braid strands, I wrapped each braid strand in a tulle tube to prevent flyaway hairs and displacement, shaded with eyeshadow, and zip-tied the ends of the braids together to finish it.
I used some wide gold ribbon as the “hair ties” and added some gold and iridescent glitter for some extra flair.
