Angel Dust Cosplay – Chest Fluff Tutorial
This post covers how to create the chest fluff piece for an Angel Dust Cosplay from Hazbin Hotel.
I’ll be providing step by step instructions with images, a materials list, and the pattern I drafted for you to be able to print and use
Material List
- White Faux Fur (~0.5 yard)
- White Cotton Broadcloth (~ 1 yard)
- White Nylon webbing (~2 yards)
- 2x Center release buckles or parachute buckles
- 2x Slide buckles
- Polyfill stuffing (optional)
The Pattern
I am not a seamstress, this pattern is far from perfect, but it gets the job done!
This was made to fit someone that wears a men’s small size shirt.
Step 1 – Cutting the Pattern
Start by tracing the patterns onto the respective fabrics using either an air-soluble marker or tailors chalk. These materials are white, so you want to make sure you use something that can be easily removed/wiped away.
When tracing onto the fur, be sure to be mindful of the flow of fur, you want the fur to lay in the “down” direction (towards the pointed end of the piece).
Important – Do not use fabric scissors to cut the fur! Use an xacto or similar razor knife and carefully cut along the pattern lines.
Step 2 – Hems and Darts
Once the pattern pieces are cut out, take the cotton backing fabric and fold the edges in and pin them in place, and stitch them down to make the hem. Fold the darts together and stitch together to start making the shape for the chest.I recommend hand-stitching the darts on the fur pieces, fur is sometimes fickle with sewing machines and this piece is short enough that hand sewing will be easier.
After the edges and darts of the cotton backing fabric are done, align the fur and cotton pieces with the furry side of the fur pressed against the “good” side of the cotton backing fabric. Pin/clip the pieces together along the sides and top of the pieces and stitch into place.
Once the pieces are attached at the top and sides, flip the pieces so that their right side out. If necessary, use a toothpick to gently free any fur trapped in the seams.
If you want to add extra volume to the chest fluff, skip the rest of this section and continue to step 3.
Once the pieces are flipped right side out, you can hand-stitch or hot glue the bottom length of the fur to the cotton backing fabric
Step 3 – Adding Extra Fluff (Optional)
Flip the pieces so that their right side out. If necessary, use a toothpick to gently free any fur trapped in the seams. Take some of the polyfill stuffing and add it to the pocket between the fur and backing fabric.
Step 4 – Adding Straps and Buckles
Take the nylon webbing and measure how long you need the straps to be from the top of the fluff piece to the middle point at the back of your neck and from either side of the fluff piece to the middle of your back.
Attach your slide buckled and center release buckles to the end of either strap and stitch in place as needed (either by hand or with machine).
Step 5 – Adding Shading and Heart Design
I used painters tape to mark out where I wanted the heart to be, not pressing it into place hard but just laying it gently so it’s stuck to the ends of the fur. After that, I used an airbrush and light pink paint to add shading to the top and side fluff and carefully painted the heart.
If you don’t have an airbrush, pink pressed powder or blush can be applied with a soft fluffy brush and sealed with hairspray or acrylic sealant or pink paint can be applied a dry-ish sponge brush.
